How
How can you write such exquisite fables?
When the world is full of monstrosities?
My every word hangs within the balance,
And the feeble roots of our sovereignty.
The air is teeming with the cantankerous breath,
Of those that seek to destroy,
And through the vapours that remain,
The mirage of our corruption is made.
We cannot retain, we cannot endure,
Upon the roofs of our buildings and towns,
How can it be that such squalor surrounds me,
When the queen's still wearing her crown?
Why do we expect such a misconception of ideas,
To evolve to everything but dust?
What has been deduced from such preposterous ideas,
Of death, destruction; the lust.
How does it feel? To be so absolute?
To understand the horrors we impregnate,
Into the soils of our land- the seeds we feed,
To the animal and the human and the trees.
And yet we still do it.
We have yet to cease our excuses.
We have yet to expose the carnal fury we excrete so discrete,
Crack it open and drink from the honesty inside.
How do you sleep at night?
I assume on occasions you will curl up tight,
But is it to fend off the cold?
Or the electrifying fright-
That is a product of your murderous tenacity?
Are you frightened because you are aware?
Because you know of the elk you have been carved,
And so, lacking the strength of the oak, elm, and willow you strive to be, you fold, furl and curl?
How can it be, that the strength you seek, you tear and soil,
To produce the very paper on which I write these words to you?
What did you wish to create? Proof of our successes, our achievements?
The Bible? The al-Qur'an? The Veda?
And what have we learned? How did you read the scriptures?
With still hands? With a steady pulse?
How so? How can you translate such simplicity and affection,
Into a battle plan of complexity without even a clamour upon your brow?
It is a puzzle of vast proportion and scale,
No reflection on the past, no brief thoughts spent on the future.
We live in the now.
We live on the who, what and where,
But not the why. Not the how.

Iziah,
first of all welcome to the halls of YPDC.
Secondly I am blown away by the talent within this verse. Lots of emotion and wisdom and talent for someone who is 17!
Good work here.

I'm admired your thoughtfull poem, considering your age (generally connected to funny and alienated people) I feel more confident about world's future. Congratulations.
I believe people are tired to live for tomorrow because there is no more utopia to believe. All ancient behavior and cultural believe has been sapping by rational thoughts, developed in these 200 years.
Who has knowledge and, especially, reason (as a way of live to leading his existence) doesn't satisfy on his own religions ans, even, scientific ideologies; since they are regretful (in soul) and limited thoughts (related to just body aesthetics), respectively.
Due to this paradox, today, in general, you have two ways: can be an alienated ascetic (forsaking your reasonable thoughts and argues) or an agnostic anware (denying your belief and having no hope). is very hard to not choose one of thsese behaviors, since men needs faith and whatever idea you follow will be your "religion".
Only thing you can do difference to others is to trust your thoughts.
Good poem,
Leandro Monteiro |
