Did you hear me when I called you, the last time?
I thought you turned your head and paused a little in your step;
Did you hear, then, and just keep going?
Was it irritation or frustration that made you clench that fist
As you left me torn and broken in the sand?
Did you really think I wouldn’t call?
Did you really think you’d leave me,
Trapped and suffering as I was,
Without my calling out to you, to try to save myself?
But you left me, torn and broken, in the sand.
There was only you to save me
But you chose to walk away.
You chose to leave me, where I cannot escape.
You chose!
Chose to leave me, torn and broken, in the sand.
But you stay on the horizon
Sometimes near and sometimes far;
A shuttered lantern to my darkness;
A flame that gives both light and pain.
That leaves me, torn yet hoping, in the sand,
When death of hope would give me peace.
