Christ and the Frontline Soldier

My Son!

I love you son! - and all your battling brothers!
To whom it fell this bitter war to fight:
You see me not, but I am there to smother
And keep in check the grim-faced reaper’s blight.

You sacrifice, but I am your reward,
And rich you are through my abundant grace:
Your wounds I’ll ease with unguent and nard,
And sooth and cool them in the battle’s blaze.

You youth’s bloom shrinks from this hellish strife
The mad explosions and the black-mouthed gun,
But I am springhead, source and fount of life,
And from my mouth sweet living waters run.

I dwell within you always, for you are good,-
But I my child,- the highest good of all,-
I will protect you with my precious blood
And be with you, whatever may befall.

You fear the noxious arms, the toxic shell,
Shrink from the heavy bombs, and battle field,
But I will shut and seal the gates of hell,
And be your rock, your anchor and your shield.

You’r hungry and exposed to storms of sand,
Deprived of sleep - and great is your fatigue,
But I my son, hold over you my hand
To strengthen you whenever you are weak.

Your fortune’s star, your fate is in my hand,
Which raises bloom afresh from bloodstained sod,
I’ll fill your cup, and grant what you demand,
If you but cling to me, your Lord and God.

The above is the English translation - my Mother's German original is below:

Ich liebe Dich - und alle Deine Brieder
In Kampf und Not;

Und gebe Dir, was alles Du begehrst.

Ich geb' Dir Licht, von meines Lichtes Quelle,
Damit Dein Fuss stets finde seinen Pfad,

Sei nie verzagt was je Dein Herz bewegt,
Das ueberlasse Deinem Gott und Herrn.
