Always Closer

An old maple,
older even than the wall running to its base
its branches reaching far to each side
casting a wide shadow across the field.

A sturdy wall of stone,
broken only by a single tree
dividing the field in half,
grass rolling out to either side.

Long both these monuments stood together,
both sturdy and strong against the elements.
Many years have gone by with only one tree,
no seeds taking root in the hot field.

Finaly a fateful day, two seeds whirling down,
each to land gracefuly on the ground.
Partly in the shade, and partially in the sun.
A momentus occasion with just one catch:

It would be long before either seed knew,
knew that it was not alone,
for nearby there was a wall, what could be beyond?
Perhaps a wood, or a forest; neither could know.

But for each there was a kindred spirit just beyond,
beyond reach and just out of sight.
In time they grew however, and caught a glimpse,
sight of the other side.

It was not a sprawling forest,
or anthing different from what they knew,
with one small change, they were not alone.
Two maples, young and the same in many ways were no longer alone.

Still separated by the wall, they waited,
waited until they grew large enough.
They wanted to reach out, to touch,
to grow together, together over the wall.

Still the young maples stand,
but not alone. Together they grow,
higher and closer, always closer,
leaning together, always closer.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
