The River of your Life

It may have been that piece of wood
That drifted slowly by.
It might have been some other craft
That pushed the waters high.
It could have been the emotion
That cut it like a knife,
And altered your chosen course in
The river of your life.
By then, your boat was sinking fast,
Below the water line,
And, pulling hard for the shore
Though running out of time;
You called to me across the world,
A heart through so much strife,
To rescue you from drowning in
The river of your life
It might have been the fleeting sand
That stopped you in your fall.
It may have been that one true love
That heard you in your call.
It could have been that solid rock
That grazed your wounded heart.
In certainty, it was my soul
That flew to take your part.
We pulled ourselves up on the beach
And lay down on the shore.
As I settled down beside you,
And held you evermore,
We bound ourselves together:
Joined throughout this life.
We saved ourselves from dying in
The river of your life.
