The sapling feels the light as he is born from the soil.
The grass he parts and allows him to see the blue.
The sun smiles and welcomes him.
The brambles they secure him, protecting him from the grazing of the hungry.
His mother whispers to him with the assurance that all will be reborn.
He prospers and survives the loneliness of winter.
He saw us grow, and nourished the earth with his breath,
He gave us food to eat and broke the wind from our backs.
He gave us shelter. He gave and took nothing.
Many winters and summers pass and he sees further and further with the years.
He sees the burden of war, he sees houses and families come go and grow old.
He sees the gassing of the earth, his tears fall and harden on his skin.
He is the sound of Autumn as he breaks underfoot,
His hopes drift from those branches in a melancholy rainbow,
The robins they take refuge in his arms.
The winter comes and goes, and the leaves they do not return.
He is old his skin scarred and wrinkled
giving niches for others to live within.
He was that shadow in the pasture,
he was that everlasting feature,
he was all and was nothing.
A cemetery expands and the tree is desecrated.
the stones are erected
And a sapling pushes his way from the earth.
