war

He looks out the plane window
Then looks around at his brothers
All wearing camo and holding rifles
Nobody speaks, nobody moves
He sits in silence as he crosses the ocean
He is there but his heart is not
He left it behind when he said goodbye
When he let her go, he left her with his heart
Twelve months apart, will their love last?
He wonders every day if she’ll wait for him
Will she hold fidelity or break his heart?
Does she know she is the reason he fights?
The plane lands and he sets up camp
His home for a year and maybe his grave
He knows he may never see her again
But her picture is always in his hand
He sleeps in the sand each night alone
Dreaming of his return and her angelic face
He hopes to wake and be in her arms
But he knows he will only be holding his rifle again
He wakes in an instant from a loud scream
He hears the mortars fall and grabs his helmet
His brother cries from pain of a lost limb
All he can think is, thank god it’s not him
He hides in the trenches, huddled in a ball
He looks at her picture and prays he’ll see her again
Then without warning, a sharp pain in the chest
A bullet has truck him through his bullet proof vest
The corpsman is there right by his side
The doc looks him in the eyes and says he’ll be fine
He closes his eyes and dreams as the sun begins to shine
He wakes in the hospital with a nurse this time
He’s going home, bandaged and bruised
But he knows wounded is better than dead
His fight is done, his battle won
As he sees her smile waiting for him
