Falling Grains

The one enemy man cannot escape
Once breathing is the same thought dying
Each minute brings him closer to his fate
Yet the heart beats fast, defiant in trying.
Upwards growing, at first so strong, man stands.
Magnificent in his ability.
Yet grains fall, insistent in their demands.
Ignoring illusions of liberty.
The body now fails, shoulders stoop, joints creak
The mind flits from place to place, memory
Remembered of past days when being weak
Was for other people, not ever we.
Death lifts his hourglass aloft and call
His hand reaches out as that last grain falls.
