Children's Requiem on a Hill

I had this dream-last night
of a hill
a great, softly sloping thing
with long green grass
and it seemed to be in a state of twilight
with all of the stars above,
and the last rays of the sun over the horizon.
This hill had an air of sadness about it,
for this was where childhoods ended
and the children who sat on its slopes
were those who were destined soon be adults.
Some sat in groups, whispering to each-other
laughing, weeping.
Others sat alone, eyes focused on the darkened sky.
Some ran with kites through the tall waving grass,
and still others walked slowly through the soft trails left by
those who had come before.
And, one by one, they would fade, their last whispers
echoing gently.
