All is not doom and gloom
No matter what the papers say;
Acts of love and kindness shine
Like shafts of sunlight amid the grey.
“Every cloud has a silver lining”
Is an oft repeated, positive phrase
That keeps us hopeful and enduring
In harsh and snowy winter days.
I watched and pondered as a little sparrow
Foraged among dead leaves for a meal,
He busied himself to find a morsel of bread
That no bully starling did steal.
And when he succeeded in his quest
A widow from her window did smile
To see him enjoy his little treat,
Yes, it warmed her heart for a while.
I also saw, just the other day
A child in a pram, purple with rage
Squealing like a little mouse
Trapped inside a cruel steel cage.
He couldn’t be pacified it seemed
Until a man knelt down, knee-high,
And gave him a red balloon –
Well, in an instant it dried his eye!
These were merely two occasions
Where kindness won victories,
And it would warm many more hearts
If T.V. reported events like these.
