Emissaries of Light

When emissaries of light have
traveled their paths, thinking in vain of radiants,
let them pause a moment,
if not to contemplate their kingdoms.
Let them know there is an eye
more sentient than absorption,
more pragmatic than the heat-trapping
Venusian clouds, an eye which might be a
mirror on the other side—and subsequent
minds which might be in equal
parts the brilliance of sent sprawling messages.
Beatify Thuban to hear, his teeth chattering at home,
that we will ogle at him again
if he might pull himself up by the bootstraps
and spin us with mansuetude
once again,
or whenever that maven Hipparchus
etched is appropriate
in his notes,
and
please let the sceptics know
that we like groping madmen
broadcast two swatchboards into the night,
hoping that foreign atmospheres
will have acculturated fine
hospitable ears
and digits.
