When he awoke
he was on line waiting to bag
own groceries, pump his own gas.
A sixteen year old was ignoring him,
talking to a friend instead of asking
his order.
When he awoke,
he was separating his garbage
feeling sorry for murderers
not their victims,
wearing an aids awareness ribbon
explaining alternative lifestyle
to his children.
When he awoke
his world had changed
and him along with it.
Once again his father was right.
Move to the basement.
Only come out for your funeral.
