Death of a squirrel

With claws like swords, the hawk,
Driven by hunger and the sweet
Taste of blood drenched fur,
Swooped down upon its prey.
Tiny black eyes
That once focused with alert
Caution, faded into burnt
Mirrors, frozen with the
Reflection of trees
As the spirit left.
People crowd around and stare
In amazement.
‘Look at the Hawk!’
‘He’s eating a squirrel!’
‘Isn’t he beautiful?’
I wonder if I was the only one
Who heard the two squirrels
Hiding by the tree.
The cries. The curses.
‘Damn that Hawk!’
‘He’s eating one of us again!’
‘Isn’t he abominable?’
I tried to look behind the tree
to see them, but seeing me,
they did their dance. I am worse than
the Hawk.
I looked up and saw a squirrel’s nest, and
Perched on a branch below it, was the Hawk.
People were taking pictures of it with their phones.
No one noticed the two squirrels crying
Over the headless body in the grass.
No one noticed how, upon smelling death,
One squirrel stood on his hind legs and looked up into the sky.
The other hopped away shrieking, as if it were calling something, then
The pigeons flew from their hiding places and boldly landed
In the open field. And for an instant,
If you were listening closely you would have heard every squirrel
In Parkchester moan.
But no one noticed—except the Hawk.
It watched them.
I watched the Hawk. It seemed to ignore its human
Admirers.
But it posed for the pictures. Even kept its head straight
In different positions.
It watched the sun. And it watched the food.
And it watched the squirrel’s nest.
Then, as if to say “Enough!” it spread its feathers, and floated
Downward, snatched up the dead squirrel, and with two or three flaps
Of the wings, was gone.
As I walked away I heard a young woman say with excitement
“What a beautiful bird!”
