THE OLD HOME PLACE

Contributed by annie on Tuesday, 25th March 2003 @ 07:25:00 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

I visited my old home across the tracks,
It had been years since I had been back,
Someone else had made it their home,
The inside looked so different as I roamed,
The room that was mine way back then,
Looked even smaller as I stepped in.

Asking if I could walk around out back,
There was that lonesome old railroad track,
The trees were not growing quite as thick,
Perhaps my memories were playing a trick,
Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath,
I thought of all those that had passed in death.

The tall trees so graceful, limbs seemed to be reaching,
As if to draw me once more into their powerful branches,
Standing still I knew the changes were not good,
Then I was overcome by memories of my childhood,
It seemed that I could hear my grandmothers voice,
Calling loudly to me asking where are the boys.

It is supper time she called for all four of us,
Be sure to wipe your feet and wash your hands first,
Then another sound from memory got my attention,
But this is something I don't care to mention,
It will only take me into a depressed state,
To make amends now is way too late.

Once more I looked at the tall high trees,
Remembering how they use to protect me.
How many times in the years gone by ,
Had I climbed these trees just to hide,
They made a great high sheltering place,
When there were things I could not face.

As I said goodbye to the ones who lived there,
I drove away without any despair,
So happy was I to know in my mind,
That going there at this particular time,
Was a healing process that now I could let,
All things in the past go, forgive and forget.
