From Cradle to Grave

From cradle to grave,
Corruption holds its sway.
Every damn thing has a ‘price’,
Some fixed, some negotiable.
Deep-rooted in a compromising society,
It firmly established its entity.
On demand when you agree to pay,
‘The Mamool’* gets things done for you;
And hassle free service it will ensue.
Refusal would create hurdles
That you may never cross
To win the crucial race.
If you fail to stop by the red signal,
Hurriedly a cop comes after you,
Not to hand over charge sheet,
But to collect a few bucks, tactfully.
Getting a driving license
Is easy like a child’s play,
Touts are there to help you all the way.
Applying for a passport?
Worried about police enquiry?
Oh! Relax my friend,
When your area police station
Summons you on a hectic day,
Generously be prepared to pay,
Your file is cleared the same day.
Are your pension papers still pending?
Stealthily drop a pack of currency notes,
In the drawer desk of that harassing
And serious looking office guy.
Cheers! Get your pension orders very next day.
Follow me to that graveyard for a moment, please.
There you see a dead body placed on the pyre,
Waiting to be lit,
The in-charge there demands ‘extra charges’
For his enduring ‘services’.
Bargaining is going on briskly
To settle for a final and acceptable, ‘rate’.
The dead man’s soul is hovering over,
Cursing its fate
And delayed departure!
Like a malignant growth in a human body,
Corruption weakens a nation day by day
Leading to unceremonious fall one day.

* a regional slang for bribe.
