Dream Digger

I trace tonight with my eyes
my heart a vagabond that defies
nobody but itself
Hermit crabs scuttle about
colourful granules of prickly sand
seemingly sociable
but always insipidly alone
When the sun rises
they scatter to seek refuge
in any dark and silencing shelters they can find
sometimes in twos,
sometimes even threes or fours
But always cowering
under their own cavernous shells
