Poison Ivy Grows on the Mass Graves

Contributed by shaynki2 on Monday, 23rd March 2009 @ 10:16:26 AM in AEST
Topic: Grief

Im on a Holocaust memorial trip to Poland
The Trip has been intense
Im winding down
Losing control of my emotions
We're standing at yet another site of a mass grave
I put my hand out to touch the plants around me
And get stung
And thats when I notice it
The Irony
And I sit down then and there and write:

Poison ivy grows on the mass graves
Nothing else is living
Poisonous leaves sting
Guarding the dead
Leave me alone!
How dare you try touch
Try connect to us
Where were you the day we died
What did you do to stop it
We, the dead, have put up a barrier
A barrier of poisonous leaves
Do not touch us now
You have no right.

We, the Nazis, planted the ivy
Look, Jews, look how pathetic you are
How pathetic you still are
Still today you can do nothing
Nothing to help your people
Still today we sting you
We poison you
With our poison ivy leaves
Planted on this mass grave
Of your people
Go away! You pathetic Jews
We know we never managed to get to you
But with these leaves
That we planted on this grave
We, in revenge of your being alive
Will sting you here forever and ever.

We, the Polish bystanders, planted the ivy
We feel no remorse to what happened to your nation,
To your people
There was nothing we could do to stop it
Stop visiting this place, you downtrodden Jews
Leave our country! Go out the same way you came in!
We have spared you; your lives
Only stinging you with the poison leaves
We truly don’t want your mournful people
Invading our cities and streets live the vermin you are
And so, with this poison ivy, we hope to ward you off
With their sting
Never to visit the grave again
Please, leave us, the Polish bystanders, in peace.

I, G-d, G-d alone, planted the ivy
Nobody, do you hear me, NOBODY is to touch the grave
I hang my head in shame at the tragedy that befall
My beloved people
I hang my head in shame at my creations
The monsters I created,
You call them Nazis
The apathetic masses of humanity I created
You call them bystanders
I cannot bear to see you crying here
Please, leave me alone, so I can mourn
What became
So I can mourn
What my hands molded
So I can mourn
What I did nothing to stop.
