The Journey

I have no memory of how I came to be here and no knowledge of where I go.
I fear the journey, but must not stop.
In rags and torn clothing, shoeless, I struggle to find a path.
Brambles claw at my skin with a ferocity that belies their lack of consciousness.
Petals on poppies droop and fall as I pass by;
They weep blood for me, in their cages of briars, but I do not stop to heed their warning.
I lean to take a rose from beside the path.
I lift it to my face
And see its pale beauty marred by the blood of my hands, that were torn by its thorns,
And its petals are crushed and broken.
I cry for my rose, but my tears fall on desert dust where nothing can grow.
I see twisted, sightless wrecks of men, who have stopped and become lost in despair;
I stray far from my path to try show them their way once more,
But my living hands burn skin where they touch, and the men will not be turned from their agony;
I leave behind me a trail of torture and pain.
I pass on to the mountains, no longer feeling the strength to carry on.
The path is steep and I slip and slide on its rolling surface.
Once, I slip.
My hand catches the ledge – I don’t want to fall.
I had not known until now that I wanted to keep going –
But I did.
I climb higher, and stop once or twice to look back.
I see others following my path, but my throat is too parched to make them hear my warnings.
I try to turn back, to caution them, but my feet won’t obey and I must continue.
The summit seems to draw away from me as I climb,
And the thing I have set as my goal is ever unattainable.
