Thank you Uncle Sam

Contributed by wrybod on Tuesday, 25th March 2003 @ 02:05:00 AM in AEST
Topic: Tributes

In 1917, three million corpses lay
stiff and rotting in the ground
what a price to pay
fighting to a stalemate
exhausted, weak and lame
You knew we needed help
to tip the balance
and you came

In 1941 we'd been fighting
the same old foe again
and loosing pretty badly
Torpedoed, blitzed and slain
Then came December seven
"a day of infamy"
and we knew again together
we would have victory

The European theatre
was not your main concern
You had another war to fight
another way to turn
Yet in this situation
you acted just the same
you mobilised your nation
and in '42 you came

Side by side in Europe
Korea and in Burma
we fought the common enemies
our friendship never firmer
The debt of gratitude to you
we can never quite repay
we've stood together in the past
and so we stand today

.

Tough times and tough decisions. Did you read my other one" Dilemma" getting at the people who think they can sit on the fence?

Kara, It's hard to convey to younger people what WW I and WW II was like. Take the casualties that we mourn today in Iraq and mulyply them by a thosand, every day for four years,

this poem written from your heart
is beautiful, right from the start
to say these words of friendship past
reminds of that our bond will last

some countries, like France
forget these truths
Sit idly by
and sabotage our troops

but you remember the pact stills stands
lets fight and have peace together
holding tightly our hands...

you have written a special piece here, Bob... thank you, from all Americans... blessings... Michele

Many people in Europe today were not even born when these sacrifices were made

TP, My father told me of the relief in the trenches in 1917 when they heard "The Yanks were comming"

We lived on Meryside and endured the blitzes of Sept '40 and March '41. We were also losind 20- -30 ships out of every convoy
we were back on our heels

We were losing the war.

I can't describe the feeling that swept the country when once again "The Yanks were comming"

Many people who were not even born in those days can never understand.

Wrybod, you write well and I appreciate you putting it on the site at this time. It makes me feel so good to hear something besides criticism of the US. Of course, I'm disappointed by the many faults within our society, but we are just human. I often thought, when the young people were being judged so worthless, that they would rise to the occassion when a crisis called. The Uk has been and is a true friend. Thank you.

I'm not used to quite so many comments. I thought I had replied to yours but I must have pressed the wrong button

If we had stood up to Hitler in the thirty's think how many lives might have been saved.

The thing we remember most about the "Yanks" is in both WWI and WW II you did not HAVE to come to Europe at all. Yet you came.

Venkat, None of us like war but when you are dealing with people like Hitler and Sadam in the end there is no choice.

Dear Wrybod,
This truly warmed my heart.
It is nice that we could put that
nasty Boston Tea Party incident
behind us! Sorry , just a little
of my stupid humor coming out.

your friend,
POOBEAR
