3479 tons of steel in the sea,
Sailors on the stern wait to see her free.
The annual sanctioned thrill ride,
when constraints are cast aside.
Jack Tars hunt a perch to see the fun.
Time for an old greyhound to do a full power run.
Safeties set, blowers start to whine.
Blowers overture sounds just fine.
Blowers scream, all eyes on the screw guard.
Hands take a grip on the superstructure hard.
Tremble of the deck, great roil rises under her stern.
Her crew know her screws have started to turn.
Halyard’s flags signal the world our intent,
to ignore Great Neptune’s trident.
Greyhound accelerates, salts smile knowing smiles,
and pollywogs wonder at excitement for a few miles.
Deck vibrates, sailors the sea astern watch.
White hats pour from every hatch.
Vibration rattles men on her stem.
Wake widens watched by her crewmen.
She passes 15 then 16 then 17 knots.
20 knots wake widens out, this no stately yacht.
25 knots, rooster’s tail tall, wake 100 yards wide.
Faster still, this is now a joyride.
4 hours at 35 knots, 60,000 horsepower screaming,
Bodies numb from vibration, ensign valiantly streaming.
Pollywogs smile now, this is great fun,
Ah, the excitement of a warship's Full Power Run.
