3479 tons of steel, and men sitting quietly in the sea,
Sailors line the stern, watching, waiting, to see her cut free.
It only happens once a year, the annual sanctioned thrill ride,
when constraints of fuel conservation are cast aside.
Every jack tar looks for a perch to watch the fun.
It is time the old grey hound does her yearly full power run.
Wait! Here that? Safeties are set; the blowers start to wind up.
Building to screaming whine, blowers overture is just the buildup.
As the blowers scream now, all eyes go to the screw guard.
Every hand takes a grip on the superstructure hard.
The first tremble of the deck, as a great boil rises under her stern.
Signals those watching that her screws have started to turn.
Flags flutter from the halyards signally to the world our intent,
to have our way with the sea, ignoring Neptune’s trident.
The greyhound speeds up, old salts smile their knowing smiles,
and the pollywogs wonder why the excitement for a few miles.
The deck starts to tremble, as the sailors the sea astern watch.
After-steering helmsman’s like a turtle from shell pops out his hatch.
The vibration works its way up through the bones of her men.
Fantail settles, bow rises, wake widens watched by her crewmen.
The old salts know when she has passed 15 then 17 knots.
Then at 20 knots her wake widens out, this is no stately yacht.
At 25 knots the rooster tail rising, the wake now 100 yards wide.
Faster still, vibrations thrumming, this is now a joyride.
Nearly 35 knots now, 60,000 horsepower screaming,
Body feels numb from vibration, the ensign valiantly streaming.
Now the boots get it, smile with the salts, this is great fun,
It's what the excitement is about, four hours of a Full Power Run.

so beautifully penned i never noticed the perfection in
the rhyme until i re-read it, the imagery is also excellent:)
