eighteen
feels no different
from the young and foolish days
of old
wishing to be grown to feel
the things the people feel and yet
i feel the same and no wiser older growner than before
eighteen
legal age to do
whatever i feel as long as it isn't
drinking
legal age to have sex with all my old teachers
though i'd never have the strength
legal to exploit and cheat and gamble
with my life
to choose for myself
the road i'll take
and all i care to do
eighteen
eighteen for almost three months
and college is still unsatisfactory
and i've still yet to be in love
and my body is exactly the same
and i feel even worse
because i know these are the prime years and i'm letting them all go
to waste

Eighteen? Try twenty-four, and I'm only just starting to get there. Truthfully speaking, the only way we waste precious years is by wishing to be what we're not. I wish I had a more emphatic way of saying that, for the knowledge dogs my every day. But it, like everything else, is best learned by experience.
Keep writing. This is good, thoughtful and unpretentious.
