The Legions Wear Lichens

Contributed by screwge on Sunday, 25th January 2009 @ 01:59:26 PM in AEST
Topic: abstract

The legions wear lichens
Like lepers, all along the sickest steppe,
And spots plague the men like felled heifers—
The men who wring their strep.

Lettuce snuffed off during infancy
And the bunny tangled by the lops,
Potato vines rival fast ivy
And stymie the shyest of crops.

If only for barley, berries, pies—
Parsnips, carrots, and cale!
Prithee find soda bread, scallops, or shallots.
Deliver us matrix of ale.

The leprechauns laugh behind linen;
For, the earth exudes potato perfume.
With sweat on the brow they wrestle,
With a song in the bosom they groom

At the barnacles brown and sea-nicked
Bursting from the underhanded soil.
Fondly remember the old swine
And wine both jaunty and royal.

Their shells are skins almost horrent
On the pestilent sea of green vines.
The leprechauns laugh behind linen!
And poke at potatoes with tines.

These coots must be drunk from the
Flowers, pink blossoms five petals
Abound, and stout is no match for the
Tubers; tubers catch felled fools in nettles!

Pregnant with starchy endeavors,
Yet parched from the monotone mash,
The men don lesions like lepers
When their teeth are want to gnash

A mainstay save the once-blighted
Precious potato abloom with aplomb,
And flushed, they yearn for a feast with all
Of the manifold promised by mom.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
