The Grimoire: II. Through Cruelty and Decay

Contributed by gravehorn on Sunday, 18th January 2009 @ 11:32:11 PM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

The famous poet took my hand and led me in the fray
To lands from where the moonlight fell and shunned the coming day.
The path we walked was feathered by the scent of rank decay
But still by foot we braved the stench through putrid shades of gray.

Oh Muses of the written word, of sonnets and of prose
I beg thee give unto my store your blessings with a rose.
Lend hence your aid to here convey the meaning of my tale
In dark and somber corners where I walk to no avail.

So it was then that in his tracks, he made a sudden stop
And with his eldritch finger showed a sharp and hollow drop.
Whose depths had been uncharted with its residents unknown.
But from the deep I heard a thousand screams and violent moans.

With willing tongue my master spoke and told me of this place;
Where shadows fell through darkness, leaving naught but cold embrace
A vault to every circle where the worst are thrown away
Beyond recall for better judgement, pain for hell's soiree.

The sound of millions praying for a death they'd never see
was music for His kingdom and a damning guarantee.
The screeching came unbearable, so then we did proceed
along the cliff and tattered edge, with Dante in the lead.

We came unto the passing where the chasm could be crossed
beyond the safety of her garden, fallible and lost.
A bridge of unseen measure and a sore upon my eye
Whose sight had churned an awful pain, so decadent and dry.

Where stone or wood would be the norm, its beams were flesh and skin
Comprised of those who never found a path to free their sin.
They followed other teachings and ignored His written word
And though they listened, never acted, 'though they never heard.

No bridge was ever longer, nor was any quite as dark,
for shame had forced the dead to bear their false, deceitful mark.
We stepped unto the platform where the bridge would make its start,
but first I felt a piercing pain that claimed my beating heart.

My eyes fell hard upon a shape I'd known in early years,
Whose death had carved my soul in two and stained my cheeks with tears.
Her limbs were nailed together while her face, she tried to hide;
My love of ages long ago, who drowned at morning tide.

No words could then be spoken, for her shame consumed her speech
She failed to hear His reason and was lost beyond His reach.
No longer could I stand there and pretend I didn't care,
So forward torn, we crossed the way, through thick and rancid air.

A mile we may well have walked; or more, I could not tell,
For sight had been a failure in this dark and putrid hell.
But after what had seemed like hours, land was within reach;
A place of mortal sinning and a kingdom we would breach.

My foot fell roughly on the ground, a welcoming embrace,
Though in our way I saw the keepers, thrice-eyed 'pun their face.
Ill masters of the inner realm and escorts to the dead,
Who guide the fallen bodies through the circles up ahead.

Four statues marked the gateway to a forest keen with death,
A sight so seldom quiet though it's sure to steal your breath.
The guardians of ancient days, with wings of blackened stone
Forever feed on tainted tears and flesh ripped from the bone.

We walked upon the entrance where the forest did begin
And with command, my master asked for passage safely in.
A darkened devil from the shadows walked with limp and spear;
He humbled with a bleeding leg, his wounds were quite severe.

Unto the locks that held the gate he plunged his gilded keys
Revealing pain in forming tongue, a forest full of trees
To where the screams were tainted by the moans of violent cries
And devils found their pleasure under mists of carnal guise.

You've penned an utterly fascinating and mortal impression that presents no moratorium for the damned. . . .but is this purgatory or somewhere eternally more sinister to abide in, hell itself? Magnificent pace & extremely spellbinding. . . please do continue. peace. elle
