Daddy's In The Stars

Contributed by Dragons_Of_Rose on Tuesday, 6th January 2009 @ 12:42:56 PM in AEST
Topic: ChildrensPoetry

I watched as she sat there on her tufted window seat,
adorn in princess pajamas with bunny slippers on her feet.
Quietly I walked across the room and moved her toys away,
making myself a comfortable seat to meet her starry gaze.

"Momma," Ginneh said, "where did Daddy go when he died?
I know the story's of heaven but what if they're a lie?
What if Daddy's stuck in the dark alone with no one there,
how do we know God came down and led him up the stairs?"

I sat there speechless, a new mother in a broken world
unsure of how to quiet the concerns of my little girl.
I reached out for her hand and she climbed over into my lap,
a cuddle position we often took to try to fill the gap.

"When I was a little girl and your grandpa worked in the mines,
there was a big explosion down in district number nine.
I used to cry in my room because I missed him so much,
Grandma would try to comfort me with cuddles and tea and such.

Then one night she told me to take a look at the stars,
because I could be sure that grandpa was where they are.
And each time one took flight and shot through the sky,
it was God bringing him home to visit for a time."

She looked back at me with a glint of hope in her eyes
and crawled over to once again look at the starry sky.
She brought her hands together and kneeled at the bay,
then quietly to the darkness she began to pray.

"Dear God, please take care of my Daddy, I really love him so.
It took me a while to realize that it was his time to go.
Please tell him that I miss him and perhaps most of all,
I look forward to seeing him when the next star falls."
