Cancer Wars

Contributed by EverlastingDawn on Monday, 5th January 2009 @ 11:56:58 PM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

She is at war with herself
With her treacherous body
It shelters a traitor within her flesh
That festers within her unsuspecting bosom

She lets them cut her
To scalpel out pieces of her soul
They hollow her out
Removing any growth she has
Leaving her less of a person
Less of a woman

They place her in a monstrous machine
It surrounds her in claustrophobia
And they microwave her
Zapping precious life from her very cells
Lashes fall from her eyes
Like the tears she has already shed

There are many pains
And many more needle pricks
She is comforted only by glaring white walls
And deep breaths of sterilized air

There is nothing anyone can do
Now or afterwards
The people around her pray
And the doctors shake their heads
No one has given up
But no one knows what to do

But we embrace her
We are family
We are friends
She holds our hand
And we share our love
As we are for as long as we are

She groans in the face of the constant agony
And presses reflexively on the morphine button
She lets a soft sigh release from her lungs
Heavy with exhaustion her eyes droop
She tries to relax into a bed that is not her own
It may be excruciating and she may not wake up
But she goes to sleep with a smile sweet upon her lips

I think you captured her agony in this piece
a hard read indeed
