One day God appeared to me
And told me some bad news
He said to sacrifice my son
And now I couldn’t choose;
Should I sacrifice my son
And listen to the Lord?
Or should I keep him safe and sound –
Not bring him to the sword?
We climbed up to the mountain top
And Isaac began to ask
Where is the lamb for us to kill
For this sacrificing task?
Then he said “Daddy is it me?
That God wants to die?
Have I done something terribly wrong?
Please tell me – have I?”
I answered him; I’m afraid you’re right,
But you have not done wrong
I will be there to join you soon
My life will end before long.
I prepared the Altar
The blade in my hand
I could have backed down now
My unsteady hand
Waiting, Waiting
For God to say
“You have proved faithful,
So stop, it’s ok!”
I didn’t have the guts to kill
Isaac – my only son
I had to obey God’s word
His controlling love had won.
Suddenly a voice shone down
God’s voice – in fact – to say
“Abraham, you‘ve proved your faith
Stop now, it’s ok!”
I never felt like that before
The greatest feeling on earth
I cried with joy – rejoice – he lives!
We laughed for all it was worth!
