The Night Of Stars and Smoke - Fragments

Contributed by 3660Days on Tuesday, 30th December 2008 @ 11:04:40 AM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

There was this night,
strange night of awakening…

…and I have clung to the memory of it
for so very long…

…to every detail, every moment,
every noise and sight and smell…

…and the stars of it,
and the smoke of it…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

we don’t all get our night of stars and smoke.

maybe most of us get a chance to look
for someone,
but…
how many ever get a chance
simply to look
for “her”?

…and still, shrouded in the evening’s fog
she echoes away

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Tents and booths
appear from the darkness
of this humid night

and there is such a freedom,
such a sense of escape
as I wander the streets
alone…

and yet, this same sense of
being alone…
…is haunting.

Faces, and faces, and faces
passing in the dark,
and still I am alone,
and watching
to see if one of these faces…

…to see if one of these faces
is her…

…and none ever are.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sitting at a musky picnic table
I am reading love poems…

both reading them to listen,
but strangely, also reading them to speak…

…and I know somehow that this night
is not just a night, but a strange
new beginning…

…a beginning of a search,
a question…

…a quest.

and these poems are floating now
into the heavens,
floating aimlessly as they try to fill the void
you left when you never arrived…

…yet.

When will you arrive, love?
When will you come home
so that I can read you these poems…

…so that I can write you poems of my own?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

You do not rhyme,
you do not rhyme,
you do not rhyme at all!!

No, you do not rhyme at all,
and this weekend has not rhymed,
and this lifetime has not rhymed,
and these stupidly silly poems
do not rhyme either…

…and the call to breakfast
was clear enough, my friend,
without your rude awakening.
