He was born in September when I was,
already a big man nearly aged three.
His arrival gave me quite a pause,
it had always been just “me”, now it was “we”.
Dad said you have a Tag-a-Long, that’s just how it was.
Right from the start he always smiled when he saw me,
To tell the truth despite my whining I began to like him.
When we played together, he laughed with glee.
He climbing all over me like I was a jungle gym,
and if I pushed him off he would scream like a banshee.
As we grew he became my Tag-a-Long,
wanting always to be with his big brother.
Didn’t matter what, football or fishing or ping pong.
always by my side, wanting to be with me rather than any other.
We both grew, we grew tall and strong.
Navy for me, standing watch on the quarterdeck,
a sailor, shouldering a sea bag, toward my ship did stear.
I could not believe what I saw, I had to do a double check.
My tag-a-long brother was coming down the pier.
I was elated at this new arrival on my ship, on my deck.
For me those have always been the best years,
brothers, shipmates, men in our own right.
When either of us had accomplishments there were cheers,
In each new achievement by him did I delight.
Two young men from Kansas, exploring new frontiers.
After the Navy, we went our separate ways,
I still sailed, he went home to Kansas.
Then years passed between conversations instead of days.
Too much time between meetings we let pass,
Time wasted on my mind did weigh.
Still when we did see each other,
it was as if no time had passed.
Big hugs, slaps on the back a kiss for my brother,
it would seem only yesterday when we met last.
Always, no matter what had passed, glad to see one another.
He grew sad, no longer me he wants to see more than any other.
He has gone to see his love now, his bride, a love strong.
It has never been this hard to say goodbye to another,
sad that no longer am I followed by a Tag-a-Long.
Today I buried my little brother.

This is sad but has it's sweetness.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Still you have all these good memories.
Huggs, prayer, blessings,
emy
Great writing. |
