you know, it’s not as if
all the beautiful moments of life
are already dead and gone.
every now and then
she still throws me a genuine miracle
or a glimpse of grace…
…like yesterday, when I saw a three year old girl
with her nose buried deep in soft and fragile flowers,
smothered by the intoxicating fragrance…
and then watched dazzling fireworks explode and echo
over Chicago’s lakeshore harbors,
and drifting sailboats, steady and purposeful
I remember when I used to smell flowers,
in the time before, which maybe never was,
but now I am gullible and tainted,
veiled by the misty loving-pain
that lies, ripped and torn,
in the gap between us…

I live in Australia and was hoping for a poem on Chicago and found a poem of beauty, loss, distance and regrets that perhaps is the start of refining oneself. |

Wonderful city. And wonderful poem. I like the imagery, both for its beauty in its own right, and for its perfect fit in the context of the poem. I like the contrast between the closeness of the girl "with her nose buried deep in the... flowers" and the distance of "the gap between us." The first part is very well done also. You captured that feeling very well both in the abstract and the later details. I was impressed with the organization. You don't lose anything, and everything is in its place.
On a separate note, I find it interesting how similar the feeling of this is to a song called Chicago by a band called the Uglysuit (http://www.rockpoplyrics.com/uglysuit/chicago.php). I guess that's not a coincidence. |
