I'll Go My Way

...all my life,
'been ringin' bells;
listenin' to,
the story each one tells;
But when they didn't ring true,
I'd just set 'em down,
and go my way...
But every once in a while,
a bell rang true,
and when it did,
this is what I'd do;
I'd memorize everything
it had to say
and then go my way...
Well, I've been criticized,
for not dressing in drag;
for not running with a herd,
or flying a flag;
you don't want to be me,
and I can't be you,
so I'll go my way...

This is enigma:
I just read the lyrics after having my horizons broadened. The "bells" were not people. I could not treat a person like a bell. The "bells" were and are concepts, ideas, philosophies, theologies, and things of the mind. I Love my family. They are good people and mean well. The, "dressing in drag" line refers to their pressures for me to be like them, which I can't. The "flying a flag" line is not referring to any nation, either. Just a little clarification. Bells can be taken or left, people must be cherrished.
