The Heart Knows

Shaun Tan: The Arrival

I was a stranger in a strange land
a stranger land than me;
but for all the worldly difference
this is where I longed to be

I was a lost soul in a godless place
where belief was everywhere;
but for all the hollow chatter
there was substance in the air

Fearful, cold and hungry
friendless and forlorn,
surrounded by the vastness
of a world suffused with scorn
I struggled through its mazes,
many times shut out
but reflecting on my choices,
I did not even doubt

Lonely in a lonely place
emptier than me;
but for all the pain and heartache,
I knew that I was free.

Spike...sometimes you just take my breath away with the wisdom of your words. This is a simple piece, but the message is pure unmitigated truth. It was just lovely. Thank you, and may you have a blessed Christmas.

Be well,
~dawn

Dear poet, I read this over and over again. On my final read (before this comment) I read it aloud. When I got to
the last stanza, a lump caught in my throat, seizing my voice. I feel a certain kinship to this piece. Keats had said,
"Poetry.... should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts, and appear almost a remembrance".
Now your work has often done this to (for) me, but I feel it most keenly in this piece. It could be the circumstance
of my situation at the moment, I'm not exactly sure, but I do know that this write is and has become one of my most
favoured of yours yet. It stirs an emotion in me that, *pauses* I guess I try to pretend is not there.

I am moved by this piece more than words could convey. Excellent work, poet.
