The Hunger

THE HUNGER

The word must be my poet armour,
No other protection can be given,
Beautiful, immortal on the banners
Glinting hidden.
Driven & falling out of heaven
This searing touch must be felt then written.

No food can ever fill the yawning,
Hollow hunger hole inside,
Nor hellebore or potion take
Pains despair in stride.
In no room nor bed can ever reside
Distraction or lasting peace, &
Robes or gowns of thickest fleece
Shall never comfort increase.
No warmth that I know
An inner ember glow,
Will ever dull the chill, once
Frozen to the marrow.

What reason have I for finery, things,
When after a moment's use
Or constant abuse
Returning acute my pain still stings.
A slip of glass or splinters steel
Lodges in my flesh, swallowed incorporate
Too coxcomb obscene, hide the wound in the spleen
& as part of the soul, cut coldly kiss, then mesh.

Death is not the answer,
Hypnotic life enhancer.
Nor love, ambition or beauty,
These ritualize & prolong the fool's
Solemn duty.
To be near again theese crowned jewels,
& defy again the universal rules;
Yet every time they strum the minstrel
Chords, like the spider in a mistral of
Its saintly hallowed head,
The bounty the web affords.
I fall upon the thing, suck it dry,
Dead in predatory haste,
Or hide within a hole
Weak, & weep in the wasting place.

Hell is in the beauty of gods,
Or her hidden & retreating face.
Hell is here within me in rancorous
Ugly disgrace,
The gifts of life & longing,
Natural reason & abstract knowing
Quicken the painful howling,
Open the veins for flowing
Rob the lungs of air in beauty's site
& cast out the soul in envy to the blizzard nite.
