THE CLARITY OF ALTITUDE

THE CLARITY OF ALTITUDE

Like a cluster of mushrooms at the
Base of some shady tree,
So seemed the village in the valley
To the hermit in the mountain.
A peaceful growth of fragile life that from
Its ornate eves & thick shutters would
Spawn & swell & grow too large in its world
One day to collapse under itself, its own
Weight, its own success, as many a village,
Town, city, state, nation or empire has
Crumbled before in the long memory of the
Ancient man, living silently in his mountain
Thoughts watching the still village below.

In the valley in the twilight of day, resting
Heavy from its labour in industry.
Where men & women with families shut out the
World & as the great protectors nurture their
Children in attention by open fires, divined
By the ancient one who sees the smoke from
Their stacks rise & twirl like their dreams.
He heard in the evening still, the chopping
Of wood, the axe bark, for another fire
In another toadstool dwelling,
Where he imagined young women stoking the
Fires for the future & he listened to the
Young men in the tavern boisterous in their
Dreams & consuming their labour in music for the
Fires of the belly, as the one who chopped
The trees, the one who burnt the wood,
Or the parents with their children
By the fireside,
That could be divined through the chimney
Where the smoke like dreams,
Twirled away to the cold, blue, starless nite.

So was the way of all life, thought the
Old man as he pondered his own existence &
Prepared the evening meal of his long silence
& solitude. Once more to eat upon himself &
Feed on his desires until in the pearl & pink
Dawn returns the rest in activity & necessity,
As the mind craves to create its place & purpose
& peace.
He sat by his stove & dreamed;
Wondered
As the smoke twirled out of his chimney
Like dreams from reality.
Watched in the cold starless nite & divined
By the ancient divinity that seeded the trees
To swirl in smoke & twirl in infinity.

I agree, a very good balance between pictures you ask us to paint and the ones you give to the mind's eye.

A poem with a very mystic feel to it. A still soul sits unmoved by the flux of time and its mutations. Reminds me of a famous poem by a great sage named "Yogi on a whirlpool".

Really nice, very descriptive, going into details, kinda like the nigth before a great calamity is about to hit.
