A Game of Catch

You and I played a game of catch:
Threw my heart to you
But you didn’t throw back
In a record story
We said, “Death or glory”
...
Nothing really worked out like we’d hoped
Like a bull hit a china shop,
Everything broke
And my rhythmic heartbeat
Hushed as they searched me
For the evidence that they never did get
But they pressed the charges nevertheless
Hardly a trial
With our firm denials
But the solar eclipse was still on its way
And the sun was gone within the next few days
But I’m still hopin'
For that dark shell to be broken
Letters sent on a one-way track
But my heart still waited
Though her bags were packed
She'd have waited forever
If I would have let her
Are these all daggers that appear before us?
Try to pull us apart,
Try to pry up our love
But they’re all liars
Paper tigers
Another year goes by and your pen is still
Suppose we always went together like water and milk
Always a gamble—
Love isn’t ample
But you can’t force blood out of a stone
So I’m heading out where the lost ones go
The sun starts to crack
Though you never came back.
