The life of an addict

Contributed by kpsniper2003 on Saturday, 15th November 2008 @ 12:16:09 PM in AEST
Topic: drugabuse

The life of an addict is a life of pain, a life of regret, a life of shame. It's a life of lost dreams and money up in smoke. Oh the things I could've had if it wasn't for the dope.
The life of an addict is a life I know all too well, the robbing and stealing, and the in and out of jail.
I know the hell of living with the shame we addicts feel so deep, the pain of having no home, and trying to survive in the streets.
The life of an addict is a life of no hope. The feeling that God has abandoned you, because of the devil and his dope.
The life of an addict has shown me things that some should never see, a mothers lost love for her children, a loss of morals and self-esteem. A life of dying day by day while making money on her knees, and bowing down to Satan, while her children curse her disease.
The life of an addict has taken fathers from their homes, with the never ending delusion of only doing one.
The life of an addict is what my life use to be, that’s why I thank God everyday for ending my insanity.
Now I’ve abandoned my past and what I use to be, but I’ll also never forget the man that was once me

I feel you man. Struggles with addiction are one of the hardest things for one to overcome. I like the style and the message here; not a poem of self-loathing, but a realistic assessment of the life, and the ability to overcome it. Well done.
