Incense upon her windowsill

Incense burned right till the end
Down upon the windowsill
To help forget the winter chill
Just warmth to help us to pretend
That we are back in summer still
In Uxbridge, feel my arm around your waist
With our love the air was warmly laced
That day we forgot who we were
That lovely feeling stuck until
Our senses came to us again
And letting this restrict our thought
We forged a parting of a sort
Made stronger by the winter rain
Released the beauty that we’d caught
Turned our backs and closed our eyes
Tears descending from the skies
That day we forgot what we wanted
But smiled in the way that we are taught
To cover up our honest feelings
As children we begin to learn
To mask our love, and not yearn
For others’ company and dealings
But before long we began to turn
Back towards each other’s charms
And back into each other’s arms
That day we forgot logic
And welcomed, sweetly, love’s return
And sweet it was for many a day
Until we stopped burning incense
And lost our comforting defence
And let our love drift away
At our happiness’s expense
But it is still within our reach
So please forgive me and let’s each
Forget that futile common sense
And let our sweet love recommence
