The Autumn Patient

I have seen Autumn febrile—
Cold and warm, to shiver,
Then still.
I have seen the trees liver-
Red, bile-yellow; lose their
Gall.
I have seen hair
Fall.
I have seen men fry a strand
In smoke,
Kids and
Strained old folk
Emerge to romp
And riot,
Then chomp
Off a branch and fry it.
I have seen Autumn ill—
Leaves plummet
In a nightly spill,
Spit
Meals
Or a feast,
Reveals
Of wreckage in the East.
I have seen Autumn cough
And quake,
Slough
Jewels for the sake
Of earnest cold
And wind on skin,
Leaves sold
To the graves of women.
I have seen this bane
Pawned in brooch
Or chain—
And approach
The ground by branch,
Or as a single drone,
Prodded by ranch-
Hand or decided alone.
And I have seen the price
Of Autumn’s early cache,
The ice
Upon a rash
Where the leaves were hurled
Early;
Winter curled
Up strong and burly.
