Onstage

Contributed by high_on_duct_tape on Tuesday, 21st October 2008 @ 06:29:01 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

An actor walks across a stage
An audience laughs at the irony
As they cry out in fear that they understand the truth

A withered mind accepts defeat
Its wrinkled body grimacing as it takes its last breath
A cry can be heard across the room, across the world
A daughter, a brother, a wife
Alone
Who refuses—still—to give up

A young man in the prime of his life dies for his god
His life has been wasted
A girl, with the safety of the blankets pulled tight
Prays to the god she knows must exist
Even more than the Tooth Fairy and Santa Clause
She refuses—still—to give up

A man falls in love
A woman plans a wedding in Times Square
And a honeymoon in Prague
A girl takes a wrong turn
She wakes up softly crying,
She will never forget his brutality, his indifference
The contentedness in his vague eyes as he raped her
A baby is born to a family
Where he will be loved
A baby is abandoned on the doorstep
Of someone who refuses—still—to give up

A three year old ingénue
Meticulously separates the chocolate frosting from her yellow birthday cake
She has never heard of hurricanes in Galveston, or stock market crashes, or genocide in Darfur
Her friends have stopped laughing at the clown and playing with the balloons
They are no longer having fun
But she refuses—still—to give up

An actor walks offstage
His dying wish was not fulfilled
The audience did not feel his desperate need to be understood
They were merely entertained
