The Warriors

They wait with baited breath
As darkness 'round them falls
Filled with fear and adrenaline
They strain towards the warriors call
Young men all
Each one in his prime
Waiting for the signal
Each one bides his time
One is consumed with rage
Waiting for his turn
To prove himself worthy
With wrath and ire he burns
Another is immersed in prayer
Forgotten psalms run through his head
He asks in advance for forgiveness
Mentally tallying up the dead
One is overwhelmed with thoughts of home
A child with flaxen hair skips through his mind
Memories of his wife's tearful good-bye
And his fathers eyes - gentle and kind
Rival forces nearing
Each righteous in his belief
Prepared to sacrifice their blood and souls
The world will know monumental grief
With the deafening shriek of a banshee
The bombs begin to fall
This waiting game is over
Each man answers his Motherlands call
Warring sides collide
Bloodlust tainting their sight
Hatred surges through each mans veins
But there will be no victor tonight
The Gods of War are content
The tears of blood have been freely wept
Into the realism of this lifetime
Chaos, despair and suffering have crept.

It is amazing how it is the regular people like me and you who die and lose loved ones through war. Yet, we are the ones who are against war.
I have read many poems about war and this is a really good one. Let us pray for a quick end to the fighting.

Been there, done it , well captured.
Tanna, I do't know how you feel about critical comment (just one or two words you could have left out). You're one of the very few poets on YPDC whos' work is near top class and I'd like to be of help (if welcome.)
I'm getting on a bit now (late seventies) and have had a bit published (books newspapers) If you would like to read a few of mine and let me know how you feel I'll hang on until you let me know. |
