THROUGH THE EYES OF A MODERN DAY SLAVE

Contributed by joe-joe on Thursday, 20th March 2003 @ 12:05:00 AM in AEST
Topic: AmericanTragedy

Every time black lips met white my body cringes, when they stand before God and say, "I do", my blood runs cold,

For my soul remembers my back was laid opened to keep me in their grasp and hold.

They seem to have forgotten the chains that bound my hands and feet, the suffering of my times,

Which left an indelible impression upon my psyche, robbing my soul of his rhythm and rhyme.

So I struggle, through my daily journey, with images of forgotten dreams, as the world laughs with a devilish snigger,

Barely able to keep my head above the water, suicide my only answer, my finger is on the trigger,

Don't pull cry's my soul, for tomorrow will be a better day, just fall down upon your knees and pray...

I was bred to slave at all their menial and laboring tasks, while in the shade they sipped gin from a golden flask,

Telling tales of high adventure to build up their own history with great overbearing suspense,

Told by their talebearers to the tearing down of my immortal soul at my own sobering expense.

Painted upon the fabric of their society my face has become the perfect picture of all that is evil,

Thrown into their prisons my manhood is taken, as the destruction of their cotton crop was by the boll-weevil.

Therefore with the pistol cocked my finger trembles out of control, don't squeeze cry's my soul,

For tomorrow will be a better day, just fall down upon your knees and pray...

Blurred is my vision, as I seek my place in their fallen society, filling my heart with uncontrollable anxiety,

For there is no equality as far as my eyes can see, if you have you have, if not, you live in misery.

A few of us have risen into their world, but they have lost their identity, becoming as they are,

For as long as they follow their rule, stepping upon no toes, they shower them with praise and kudos.

Therefore they have lost their identity, forgetting that they are suspects in all unsloved crimes,

Subject to be convicted without a trial, pressed into serving someone else's time.

Henceforth the hammer is about to fall blasting away their brain, don't let it strike cry's my soul, as he suffers in the pouring rain,

For tomorrow will be a better day, let us fall upon our knees and pray...

Slavery has to be the most inhumane and unjust thing that has ever taken place. No man should be a slave to anyone else.

A very heartful poem that is beautifully written.
