What Not to Say

Contributed by Demian on Monday, 22nd September 2008 @ 07:21:28 PM in AEST
Topic: HumorPoetry

"Get the door. It's Domino's."
But that's not what I say.
I'm delivering pizza at a Quality Quarters Inn
to an old guy in his boxers.
"Looks like your totaly is $13.63."
I say, as I hand him the pizza.

A college-aged girl, younger than me,
comes from around the corner
and sidles up to him.
She smiles at me,
Letting me know she knows I know.

He hands me fourteen dollars,
Then, very deliberately, counts out
one...two...three...four...five more bills

"That better be your daughter."
But that's not what I say.
"Thank you, you're very generous, Sir.
You guys have a nice evening.
Please call us again."

The girl asks if I have any parmesan cheese.
"Sorry, remind us next time."
Her eyes narrow to a predatorial grin.
I move to the car.
"I have to go.
We both have to get back to work."
But that's not what I say.
