The One Who Ran Away

I guess those days of wishing and waiting
Have far surpassed me now.
These bones feel bare without your care,
And you can’t fathom how.
A broken heart cries, a healed one yearns,
Either way my eyes never seem to rest.
Lover still consoles with offer of friendship,
No, I would say, if I knew what was best.
Friendship, we call this fickle thing,
But bitter memories fling us apart.
Your slippery, stumbling words were found
Feeding upon what was left of my heart.
Never have smiles contained such footnotes,
Never have I lost myself so completely.
Never, not once, did I look into your eyes
To see a traitor’s knife smiling so sweetly.
