I don't understand
Can someone please tell me?
Why Emmit Till was killed in Mississippi
Looking at his body glaring out of the casket so grotesquely
While two white men got off Scott free cause they said they let that "nigger" boy be
And left him alone
But still I don't understand why they took him from his home
Barely 14 in a shed all alone hearing his own cries
And I don't understand why that boy had to die two times
Bashed his head in until unrecognizable were his eyes then they shot him giving him one death
This young boy disguised in the mask of a monster
And although his body is gone
The pain lasts longer in my veins
But the story is not even finished and I’ll repeat it again
I don't understand why a cotton gin fan had to be tied around his neck with barbwire and thrown into the river with him
And there died for the second time
And my mind can't comprehend how those two could conspire
And come up with a hate so strong it burns worse than fire
And what hurts even worse is the thought of the Caucasians in the courtroom who seemed to admire the two for their evil deed
Barely 14 and I can truly admit this soldier has been through far worse than my mind could conceive
And for his mother, who only was sure it was him by his fathers’ war ring
It must have been the hardest for her to sing
The song that was forced upon her child
Deaths Song
And the fact is the two admitted to their deed
And I believe with some false pride
As they sold their story to a magazine
And conveyed that they had truly lied
And this story was broadcasted worldwide
Yet now one can tell of how we all feel inside
After reading this little rhyme
That I have devoted my energy and time to
To let everyone know how this boy died
Over a whistle

I'm sorry I don't know the background story behind this ... but this is an amazing write. It reminded me almost of "Hurricane" by Bob Dylan. Your passion was truly present in this ... and I'm horrified at what they did - the part that affected me most was where the mother could only identify her son by his father's war ring ... I can only imagine the incredible pain of identifying your own child's body in this way - her memories of that will never leave her. I can't believe they got off scott free - there is no justice in this world .. Jan |

The Emmit Till story is such a harrowing one, the case first got my attention as a young man in the 70's after hearing the bob dylan song. You have expressed the hurt, anger and general revulsion felt universally for this crime so well here. I watched a reconstruction of the case on the history channel recently and though i have heard the story numerous times i still sat there numb and cold inside. As with all murders of this nature, the only way we can hope to stop it is with education and awareness and hopefully one day we can all move forward as one people regardless of race or religion. Thank you for sharing this hard hitting but beautiful piece of work.

I saw a great documentary on the death of Emmit Till in Money, MS. It's amazing what the young man went through before his death, and he supposedly never let his attackers see him shed a tear. He wouldn't back down.
Emmit's mother insisted on an open casket funeral so the world would have to acknowledge what happened. I read that Emmit Till's death is one of the main reasons that Rosa Parks decided to stay in the front of the bus that day.
Do yourself a favor and read up on this story. I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a movie yet (to my knowledge).
I understand that the U.S. Department of Justice is re-opening the case. My only hope is that it doesn't cause a backlash of violence after people become aware of some of the things that happened. I've heard people talk of getting beat up by African-Americans that were outraged after "Roots" aired in the 70's. Everyone should be outraged when they hear this story, hopefully there will be a better outcome this time.
