The Mighty Hunter – A Tale

Contributed by wheels on Wednesday, 16th July 2008 @ 12:07:39 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

I met a mighty hunter one day
On a knoll high, where
The mists kissed damply
The ruins of ancient worship.

“Mighty Hunter,” I asked
“What dost thou seek as quarry
Where only the stubborn grasses
Cling to the stones of ancient sculptors?”

“The Sun!”
He announced with a deep and proud rumble
“But the Sun is free,” I argued
“It cannot be captured.”

“As sure as the temple about me,
It shall come and it shall be mine.”
“But the temple is nothing but ruins
Of futures past.”

“Atheist!
Can you not see?
It stands about me
As surely as my ancestors and I have built it.
Now be gone with you!”

That same day, I came upon an old man
With kind green eyes
Beneath a woven macramé face
Farming in a field.

He paused in a neighborly quest
As I approached.
“You look distraught, young man,
What has brought such turmoil upon your thoughts?”

“I have met a great hunter upon the knoll
And found him to be a fool.”
“A fool?” he asked.
“Yes, he seeks to capture the sun.”
“I see you have met my brother,” he laughed
“He is, indeed, a fool;
For he cannot capture the sun
As, it roams in my domain!”
