Roswell skies

I lay under Roswell skies, to
test the wonder of the eyes
on moving spheres and mystery shapes
to leave the silent mouth agape.
But all I saw was ebon space
and planets settled in their place
ancient stars that twinkled bright
across the patina of night.
no vapour trails of passing craft
from Betelgeuse or Alpha Prime
with fiery entrances to sky
out of space and out of time
—not even arcing satellites
in their silent, man-made flights.
The daytime showed a tawdry street
that somehow hadn’t found its feet
since army cuts took half the town
and that remaining hunkered down.
‘47, what a year
but how is it reflected here?
homage to an argued past
with copied relics under glass.
B grade movies draw the dust
near sepia photos set as shrines,
while overweight conspiracy buffs
retreat from more paranoid times
—to shops displaying souvenirs
of t-shirts and plastic fears.
Now Utah’s night sky danced and fell,
and Colorado’s as well
even Arizona’s rolled
but Roswell’s sadly, left me cold.

As we sit at our desks in our robes we contemplate the possibility of alien existence, to which we have no answer. Our friend, Zed, however is an alien, but we are not certain he exists. But in honour of your poem however, we have invited him to be a guest Ghost Alarm on this comment. So keep in mind, he may not exist, but he is from Roswell. Nobody really knows what happened at Roswell, though as your poem admits there are many theories; some more elaborate than others. It is however, hard to imagine that we are alone in such a vast universe. Just the term universe alone, causes us to wonder and to make an individual feel small in comparison to what might be. Indeed, it is apparent that there have been many reported moments of possible contact from something from out of this world, both in the Western hemisphere and abroad. There are more imaginings from what is found in ancient Egypt than what is found in the rest of the world. Though, in America Roswell is definitely the "Capital" of alien lore. You have crafted beautifully the depiction of the lore and theories that surround the year of 1947 and the happenings at Roswell. The beauty in the description that you've used has caused us not to fear, but to hope. Maybe there is something out there; maybe there is not. Just as spiritual faith, however anything that makes us feel as if we are not alone, can help us aspire to be better than we are.
We applaud your amazing, poetically profound work of art. And in honour we will all go to bed tonight with aluminum foil over the top of our heads. And that is a lot of foil for we are many.
May little tiny green men with giant heads show up in your bedroom and shout, "Gnarf Gnarf " just before shooting you with their shrink gun and then punching you in the eyes multiple times as you are now the size of tiny green men.

Aw ... 'tis sad when something we desire to experience leaves us flat.
Sometimes, the idea that we hold in our minds is far more intriguing
and incredulous than when we it becomes real; tactile. I used to want to
visit Roswell, but I prefer to let the imagination run away and set
scenes of burning sunsets with streaks of light adorning the skies and such!
*sigh*
There is something so beautifully mysterious about the unknown and
in our rush to understand it better, we distort and deform that beauty.
Great post, S. Wonderfully written!!

(my favourite star is Betelgeuse. He hails from my favourite constellation. *wink*)
