anguished

I take a stride down the street
Hands in pockets; eyes on feet
The city street's packed to the brim
A repulsive smell carries in the wind
Acid rain burns my eyes
As salesmen try to sell their lies
I turn a corner and in the dark
I find a piece of my shattered heart
A child lays lifeless in the grass
I close my eyes, but tears leak past
I fall upon my knees in vain
Remembering my childhood pain
"Turn around and don't look back!"
Turn around just to get smacked
One shot, two shots, three shots; done
One boy, two boys, three boys; gun
All alive with a lifeless corpse
All regret, but none show remorse
The vibrant colors fade to black
I see this child upon his back
A little boy--so frail and cold
Reminds me of one I used to know
I stand back up on buckling knees
Haunted by reality
The pills go down; my heart is sore
I can't seem to sleep anymore
Too many nights of restless anger
Too many boys that were more than strangers
Another brother I find lying cold
That reminds me of a boy I used to know
