She
Grabbing a cat by the tail, holding on with all your might.
Like the mast on a ships sail, always a bit out of sight.
She
Untamed, free spirited, touch of class, bit of sass.
Wrapped into one tight package, beautiful lass.
She
Contagious, over the top, perfection at it's own form.
She will not be contained or transformed.
She
A woman, a star, a midnight shadow.

You know, I have been coming across a lot of modern poetry in the past weeks. Most of it, the same old same old (which we call new). This, modern work like a handful I have read (today) and the past weeks is actually compelling. Modern poetry usually revolts me. It's emotionless garbage which runs deeper with slang than language therefore making it's universal ability void and it's timelessness very dated. I still feel modern poetry is dated (won't stand the test of time). Yet like Langston Hughes when exploring a specific time it's authentic and appropriate. In this case it is very well expressed and this work is not dated at all.
That is damn refreshing. Still I must say if modern poets would actually try to write with more inner passion and less from a rhythm poetry might make it's way back into the hearts of the masses. It hurts me when people of today seem to place poets in this "coffee house / beat nick / yuppie / hip" classification. Poetry is about what is within. It's an artistic expression. It is many other things as well. And yes, artistic expression seems to have limitless definitions in the minds of the masses (thought I highly disagree).
I really enjoyed this work and if more modern poetry was like this I'd consider opening my mind and heart a bit more to it. Your final line is phenomenal and perfectly sums up the entire work.

I have to say that is wonderful contemporary word play and I applaud you for it.
I'd like to see what you do with something a little less modern. Based on this alone I see you have talent and know how. But your depths (assumption based on this poem alone) are virtually untapped. It's a pretty package, it has substance, but it could be gourmet if you chose to draw the flavor out with a bit of spice.
WELL DONE! EXCEPTIONAL!

Man you are flirting with my woman again.
Serious I am kidding. It is cool. She loves you too.
You hit her right on the top of the nail with this one.
When you coming?

Thank you very much. Haha, yes, a woman, a star, a midnight shadow, she is always like a sunshine, to light the cold night. |
