So Many Tears

So many tears,
we’ve cried since you left us
on our own.
So many roads unwalked, songs unsung.
A tie-dyed angel, broken halo,
touching lives you never met.
So many tears,
our eyes not yet dried
on the wind.
It seems so strange to hear
Phil sing “Birdsong” for you,
Instead of you singing it for Janis.
Stranger still to realize the lyrics’ truth,
How you sang a little while
and then flew on.
But those words you sang we took to heart.
Because they touched us so,
They taught us to laugh,
to love, to live.
So many tears,
Six years you’ve been gone,
So many tears,
Since you left us on our own.
On our Own.
In honor of Jerry Garcia who taught us so
many important lessons about life
