On this Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day

As I read, through each column of names
A tear wells in my eye
And I looked about from where I sat
Then deep, up to the sky

Their names went on from page to page
And still, there were some more
I could not help, but think to myself
What has this all been for?

Sometimes we just don’t give much thought
To what it all has cost
The freedoms that we’ve come to enjoy
For the brave young lives we’ve lost

I then walked around, to the front of our home
To the flag, that my wife hung there
Its stars and stripes flew proudly
Yet, it barely fluttered in this morning’s air

My mood had now grown somber
As the sun went to the clouds
And it slipped at a very slow cadence
As if it too, had known somehow

Now I just had to go back again
To finish reading each name
It listed all their ages
And from where, they all had came

I may not have known, a single one
And their names may fade away
But they’re all remembered here in print
On this Memorial Day

ZB,

a very moving, personal tribute that resonates with previous as well as current conflicts (ergo the quote). Its not meant to be easy to sit through a reading of the fallen - that's part of the lesson, as you so expressively noted.

Technically, a couple of the lines were a little long, and some commas were misplaced. Tighten these up and it will be even more potent.

this is extremely moving & erases any ambivilance one may carry about our station in live. we must hold gratitude for all who came before us to create what we have now. the lives, the pain, the loss of consciousness right before each lifes' fragile ending. . . tears for me as well, my friend. you represent beyond compare the blessings due to suffering that we all share. peace. elle
